IAPSP Stands with the Ukrainian People
The International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology strongly condemns the war started by the Russian government towards the government and people of Ukraine, a war that continues to cause unspeakable and intolerable human suffering. We stand in solidarity with many organizations, including the American Psychoanalytic Association, The International Psychoanalytic Association, The European Psychoanalytical Foundation, The National Psychological Association of Ukraine, as well as the people of Ukraine and neighboring countries impacted by this blatant and unprovoked violation of basic human rights. The violent acts being committed by the Russian government and military violate our ethical sensibilities and core beliefs as Self Psychologists and contemporary psychoanalysts concerned with dignity, emotional and physical well-being, and the right to self-determination. As a global community of mental health professionals, scholars and students committed to improving the lives of individuals and society we call for an immediate cessation of this destruction and aggression and a full withdrawal of the Russian military.
We are called to speak out as witnesses to the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people in the face of carnage, trauma and loss of all they hold dear. We support and encourage our Ukrainian colleagues to continue their brave commitment to their patients and fellow citizens as they work to preserve and maintain humanity in the midst of inhumane circumstances.
We implore our governments to work for peace and the restoration of human dignity in this conflict, and in other conflicts around the world.
We call upon our global community to welcome refugees who have been displaced and to aid them in their time of distress.
We urge our members to provide material support through organizations that are providing aid to those suffering from displacement, the loss of community and loved ones, and the inaccessibility of basic human needs such as safety, food and shelter.
