IAPSP’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

We are an international community of mental health professionals dedicated to improving the lives of our patients and communities and to deepening our understanding of humanity. Because our theories developed in a particular historical context, we are obligated to reflect on the implications of that history, including marginalizing sociocultural systems, and to question the ways that psychoanalysis and IAPSP perpetuate structures of privilege, colonialism, and capitalism. Repairing the harm from discriminatory practices and attitudes must begin by identifying any complicity with and participation in others’ suffering, be it intentional or unintentional. Recognizing the complexity, realities, and legacies of racism and other forms of discrimination, either by law, custom, or biased social and institutional structures, is crucial to cultivating diversity, equity, and inclusivity in our profession.

Dismantling the structural barriers that discourage historically marginalized groups from finding a professional home within IAPSP is one of our main organizational priorities. With humility, we dedicate ourselves, as an organization, to identifying how we perpetuate history in our theories, on our lecterns, and in our interactions; to addressing history’s lingering effects; and to engaging in ongoing dialogue with those most impacted. We understand that each country has its own history and practices of exclusion. We call on Self Psychologists universally to confront biases and their consequences within each country and to facilitate more equitable and inclusive environments that promote the dignity and well-being of all people and communities.

To meet this challenge and to create substantive, transformative, and sustainable change, our organization commits to the following:

  • The International Council, the Executive Committee, and every standing committee will keep diversity of background, perspective, culture, and experience at the forefront of their work.
  • We will provide and facilitate discussion groups for our members that highlight racism, prejudice, and bias of all kinds.
  • Conference planners will prioritize and amplify diverse voices by inviting people from historically marginalized groups to participate on our international conference plenary panels.
  • We will offer scholarships and reduced membership fees to professionals from marginalized and underrepresented groups and economically stressed regions of the world who need assistance to join our community and attend our conferences.
  • We will encourage our members and affiliated training institutions to further this work, actively seeking to identify and ameliorate blind spots and prejudices within their communities.
  • All conversations will be conducted with an attitude of acceptance and respect.

Injustice is ongoing. This statement serves as an aspirational guide for structural and cultural change and sustaining a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive organization. We will revise and update this statement as our awareness deepens.
